For example, would it not have been much more useful to do either just as you suggested or, like adults, attend and ask sharp and respectful pertinent questions about Penzler and his past behavior and selections.

The point I'm trying to make is, that society is like watching a MLB game from 1970 and then one from today and not seeing the same thing whatsoever because of cultural and game changes and to be fair and in-depth, it might be more productive to consider where one came from before trying to throw out the baby with the bathwater.

And please don't mistake this for excusing or condoning horrible and wrong behavior, because it's not - it is about maybe this eighty-plus year old man has changed his perception, and if he hasn't, then holding his feet to the fire might have had a better result. But we will never know because of the idiocy over automatic "cancelation" in this country.

E. The Americans then express outrage while he tries to explain how to him and people from Britain, the word "cunt" means something entirely different than the American interpretation, but of course, the Americans refuse to accept that.

Then, recall about 20 years ago, a teacher - I believe it was a college professor - used the word "niggardly" in a class and was widely criticized for it. To me, back then, this whole automatically offended class should have been shut down then because really, doesn't the outrage of a word that means miserly because it looks and sounds similar to the other word actually show a massive amount of utter ignorance by a population?

And to me, little attention should be given to those that remain willingly stupid, however, there is a difference when dealing with the unwillingly ignorant because they are at least open to the exposure of knowledge.

E. One thing it did so well was convey the dark humor of policing that sometimes is lost these days.

One program that I feel is consistently overlooked is that of Joseph Wambaugh's Police Story series. In ways, I think this was even more of a precursor to modern police programs than HSB. E. Blogging exists in a bit of a void these days and it’s always nice to know folks are reading.
THE SHIELD is on our list of shows tore-watch, as we have not seen it since our initial binge that ended in either 2009 or 2010. (We did not see it when it was on FX.) TRUE DETECTIVE (Season 1) will make an appearance the next time we subscribe to MAX. (We tend to rotate the big subscription services for variety.)
I have only ever seen NYPD BLUE once, and that was six or seven year ago. Shows we are sure to revisit, as they have shown us they bear up under repeated viewings over time, include DEADWOOD, THE WIRE, JUSTIFIED, and THE SOPRANOS.
In the realm of comedy, we are currently watching MOM and loving it. I am seriously considering going back for BARNEY MILLER after MOM’s run ends.
Dana Kinghttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01350344882342624735noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4045057682441280238.post-65971986051809630022023-12-15T19:47:29.206-08:002023-12-15T19:47:29.206-08:00Sorry they didn't hold up, but excellent essay...Sorry they didn't hold up, but excellent essay on the whys of it.

I think NYPD Blue holds up better. I recently (i.e., this year) re-watched THE SHIELD for the first time since its finale originally aired, and overall, it held up very well.

And, of course, TRUE DETECTIVE (season 1) is timeless...

One thing you didn't mention that I think might also play into our re-viewings (and perhaps explain some of the missing luster) is simply how the program was part of the zeitgeist of the time. People were watching it, commenting on it, discussing it at work, etc. On re-watch, there's none of that hype or community -- it's just what the show is all by itself. Hence, those cracks you point out in your post really show up..

Just my dos centavos.Frank Zafirohttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01846847831614880053noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4045057682441280238.post-87286194117459339042023-12-15T19:32:28.931-08:002023-12-15T19:32:28.931-08:00Pluperfect...pluperfect??? I just read a post by Neil Gaiman when I was searching out something and he said I write a blog post because I don't keep a diary. Which is a good enough reason in itself.

I have sort of let my own blogs lapse, but have some intention of getting at least one of them going again, if only to see what new posts from friends and other writers pop up in the sidebar. But I think there are always gratifying experiences to have from them. The other day, I got a comment on a very old post from a father who said that even though I had written it in 2009 (!) he and his child had gotten much satisfaction from a post I had done on 'corkindrill', which I had written while reading T.H. White's The Once and Future King. Just in itself that makes it worth my while to have written it.seana grahamhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03774794086733027289noreply@blogger.com
